For the budget minded or those interested in venturing outside the tourist areas for some traditional Oaxacan food head two blocks south of the Zocalo to the one-block full of comedores that make up the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. As a general rule, pick the busier stalls, the locals have vetted them and the food is better. Go early in the day, the food is usually fresher. This is also a good place to try a mug of hot chocolate, another of the local specialties. Many mezcal shops ring the market; this is a good place to buy it cheaply. Most shops will let you sample the product before you buy.
