2:00pm  Documentary: 2501 Migrants: a Journey  Biblioteca: Teatro Santa Ana  Special Event

Many of you are familiar with REEL DOCS, a documentary film series started here three years ago by Caren Cross and Jennifer Posner. REEL DOCS' mission is to bring high quality documentary films and their filmmakers to San Miguel. The audience is treated to a Q and A following every film, as well as to a VIP margarita reception in which the audience can further interact with the filmmaker.

The kick-off film for this season is 2501 Migrants: a Journey, an inspiring film created in Mexico that explores the questions of art, the artists, and an indigenous community. Yolanda Cruz, award winning filmmaker, will be answering questions posed by the audience following the film.

Cruz is a native Oaxacan who now lives in Los Angeles. Her work has screened to much acclaim at film festivals and museums around the world including the Sundance Film Festival, the Guggenheim Museum, and Park la Villetter in Paris. 2501 Migrants won"Best Documentary" in Expresion en Corto 2009.

2501 Migrants is about the response of Oaxacan artist Alejandro Santiago to the impact of migration on rural Mexico. Santiago, an affluent, erudite artist returns home after a brief self-exile in France. But upon arrival to his native Teococuilco, he is struck by what he perceives as a virtual ghost town. Alejandro experiences, first hand, the reality that Oaxaca has emerged as one of Mexico's leading exporters of human labor to the United States. Inspired by this, he decides to create a monumental installation art piece: 2,501 life-size sculptures as an homage to each individual migrant who left his village.

Alejandro's quiet demeanor and passion for art is celebrated and captured as respectfully and beautifully as each individual sculpture. His passion and his knowledge are shared with those who have stayed behind. They've dedicated their lives to this installation in honor of their small Oaxacan town.

2501 Migrants: A Journey will be shown on Friday, February 25 at 2 PM and Saturday, February 26 also at 2PM. Both screenings will be held in the Santa Ana Theatre at the Biblioteca and will include a Question & Answer session following the film. Tickets for each day are 80 pesos, which includes a special VIP reception with Yolanda Cruz, director and producer. Tickets are available starting today at the Santa Ana Box Office.

Two other films are scheduled for the REEL DOCS season. The Art of the Steal will be shown on March 3 and 5. This gripping documentary portrays one of the art world's most fascinating and controversial stories. On Roger Ebert's list of the Ten Best Doucmentaries in 2010, The Art of the Steal chronicles the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation, a private collection of art valued at more than $25 billion. Producer Lenny Feinberg will be present.

And, on March 29th and 31st Playing for Change will be shown with producer Mark Johnson presiding. This film tells the story of how the world can be changed for the better by creating peace through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people.

More details about the REEL DOCS season can be found www.reeldocs.org.

2:00pm  Food, Inc. Not for the faint of heart.  Biblioteca: Teatro Santa Ana  Movie

“You'll never look at dinner the same way:" that's the tag line of Food, Inc. and it is particularly true if you live in the US and you shop at a conventional grocery store. Produced by Eric Schlosser of Fast Food Nation and directed by award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner the film is a sobering, infuriating expose of the industrial food racket in America.

Narrated by Schlosser and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) the film's three parts explore factory animal farming, the consolidation of grain and commodity crops, and the corporate interests that have come to dictate food policy in Washington.

From the window-less, overcrowded chicken coops contracted by Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods, to the manure-ridden, bacteria-breeding feedlots of Smithfield Farms, we get a horrifying look at the inhumanity and foulness of industrial animal"production". Down on the farm, the filmmakers give a tutorial on the market distortions caused by the commodity-heavy US Farm Bill that subsidizes soybean and corn at rates that cause massive overproduction and require ever more ingenious and scientific uses for said crops, and its influence over the American diet. And if you are not already appalled and infuriated every time you hear the word"Monsanto", a look at what this mega-corp has done to the livelihood of Midwestern farmers and small business owners who have eschewed their"patented seed technologies" should make you run out and join the Organic Consumer's Association in it's Millions Against Monsanto campaign.

At the heart of the film is the central message: all of this is making us sick. Whether it's the rampant presence of E.coli in industrial meats or the high-fructose corn syrup found in everything from Coca-Cola to Salad Dressing, the film reveals the hidden costs of cheap food and the billions of dollars spent each year to conceal them. A trip to Washington, DC illuminates the corporate control of food policy and the commandeering of such important public agencies as the FDA and the USDA.

Food Inc. is an important film for anyone concerned with food safety, animal rights, nutrition, health or sustainability. And it's a must see for anyone whose New Year's Resolution is to go veggie (it's like a nicotine patch for the recovering meat eater). One warning, though, in the words of Eric Schlosser, "The industry doesn't want you to know the truth about what you're eating - because if you knew, you might not want to eat it." You may never be able to shop in your chain grocery store again.

4:00pm  Art Documentary : The Art of the Steal  Biblioteca: Teatro Santa Ana  Movie

The Art of the Steal is a riveting documentary about one of the art world's most fascinating controversies: the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation. Roger Ebert places The Art of the Steal as one of the Ten Best Documentaries of 2010.

We are delighted that Lenny Feinberg, producer and the driving force behind the film, will be on-hand for a Question & Answer session following the film. This controversial film finds audiences on divided sides. We expect that the discussion following the film will be quite spirited!

The Barnes Foundation is the result of Dr. Albert C. Barnes' commitment to buying high quality European, African and American art during the 20's, 30's and 40's. Located just 5 miles outside of Philadelphia, it is a $25 billion art collection that includes 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, 59 Matisses and 46 Picassos.

Now, more than 50 years after Barnes' death, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court for control of the art, and intend to bring it to a new museum in Philadelphia. Standing in their way is a group of Barnes' former students and his will, which contains strict instructions stating the Foundation should always be an educational institution, and that the paintings may never be removed. Will they succeed, or will a man's will be broken and one of America's greatest cultural monuments be destroyed?

Using archival material and many interviews to present a case that audience members will find either compelling or strident, depending on their point of view, The Art of the Steal brings to life one of the most adored and detested figures in the American art world.

The Art of the Steal will be shown on March 3 and March 5 at 4 PM at the Santa Ana Theatre in La Bibiloteca.

5:00pm  The People Speak  Biblioteca: Teatro Santa Ana  Movie

This week the Center for Global Justice honors two life-long activists for social justice: historian Howard Zinn and folk singer Pete Seeger. Since its publication in 1980, Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States has opened the eyes of millions to the role of ordinary people in the making of our nation's history. His message was that history doesn't come from great men, it comes from the bottom up and it comes from their struggle. As Naomi Klein has observed,"he told people to believe in themselves and their power to change the world," a message especially relevant at the present moment.

This message is dramatized in the film The People Speak, which uses some of the historical letters, diaries and speeches of ordinary Americans who, through their words and actions, changed the course of our nation. Originally broadcast on the History Channel, this film was written and co-directed by Zinn shortly before his death. Its readings and music is performed by a star-studded cast from Danny Glover and Morgan Freeman to Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. It brings alive popular struggles at key moments of U.S. history. This certainly isn't the way most of us were taught history in high school.

Pete Seeger needs no introduction. As composer and performer of folk music, his has been an active voice in most of the social struggles of the 20th century in the labor, peace, civil rights and environmental movements The PBS documentary Pete Seeger: The Power of Song traces his life and music. He wrote such classics as“Where Have All the Flowers Gone,""Guantanamera,""If I Had A Hammer,""Turn Turn Turn," and"We Shall Overcome." Such songs have inspired millions. They demonstrate that you can be a dissident and still love your country, indeed, if you love it you have to protest in the name of justice. You'll leave the theater with his music ringing in your head and in your heart.
